Item Description

Before Gears of War, most shooters asked you to stand in the open and trade shots. Epic Games' 2006 Xbox 360 hit made cover the whole point: tap a button, slam into a wall or a chunk of concrete, blind-fire over the top and roadie-run to the next spot while the Locust close in. That rhythm, and the Lancer assault rifle with a chainsaw bayonet slung underneath, became one of the defining templates of the console generation.

The story starts in a cell. Dom Santiago breaks Marcus Fenix out of the Jacinto Maximum Security Prison and drags him back into a war humanity is losing against the Locust Horde, an army that erupted from beneath the planet Sera on Emergence Day. Marcus, Dom, Baird and Cole fight through crumbling grand architecture toward the Lightmass Bomb, a plan to strike the Locust tunnels directly. Along the way you hide from swarms of Kryll that shred anyone caught out after dark, dodge a blind Berserker you can only kill with the orbital Hammer of Dawn, and finally face General RAAM.

Little details made it feel new. The Active Reload system turns every reload into a timing challenge, rewarding a perfect press with bonus damage and punishing a fumble with a jammed gun. The Gnasher shotgun, the Torque Bow and the Boomshot each changed how a fight played out, and the gray, ruined beauty of Sera showcased Unreal Engine 3 on new hardware. Campaign co-op let a friend take over as Dom, splitscreen on one couch or across system link and Xbox Live in its day, and the four-on-four competitive modes, built around close-range shotgun duels, became an obsession for a generation of Xbox Live players.

The haunting "Mad World" trailer helped sell the game to millions, and the game backed it up. It launched a franchise that is still going, and playing the original on the 360 is the clearest way to see where cover shooters came from.

About the game

Gears of War is a third-person shooter built around a cover system, where players duck behind obstacles and use tactical fire to advance on enemies. The signature weapon is an assault rifle fitted with a chainsaw bayonet, and a timed reload mechanic can grant a brief damage bonus or jam the gun if mistimed. The five-act campaign can be played solo or in two-player co-op, and a competitive multiplayer mode supports up to eight players split between the two factions. It was the first game in the Gears of War series and helped popularize the modern cover-based shooter, later receiving remastered versions.
