The original Gauntlet taught arcade crowds that the Wizard needs food badly. Gauntlet Legends, the 1998 arcade revival from Atari Games, rebuilt that formula in full 3D, and this PlayStation version brings its relentless rhythm home: wade into a dungeon, smash the generators spewing out monsters, grab the treasure and keep moving before the horde catches up.
You choose between the four classic heroes, Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard and Archer, each leaning toward strength, armor, magic or speed. The big change from the 1985 original is progression. Slaying enemies and hoarding gold earns experience, every level raises your strength, speed, armor and magic, and spare gold buys extra boosts, so your hero grows from a dungeon tourist into a monster-shredding powerhouse over the course of the quest. The goal is to topple the bosses of each kingdom, gather the scattered Runestones and face the demon Skorne, who imprisoned the mage who summoned him and hid the stones across the realms.
This PlayStation edition is the odd sibling of the family. Where the Nintendo 64 version supports four players, the PlayStation release tops out at two, and critics at the time were lukewarm on the port. It does carry over the inventory system introduced on N64, and reviewers who disliked it still tended to praise its two-player co-op, which is exactly where Gauntlet has always been at its best.
That makes it a fun pick for a pair of friends who want a straightforward evening of hacking through skeletons and ghosts together, and a curiosity for Gauntlet collectors who want to see how Midway squeezed its 3D arcade dungeon crawler onto Sony's console.
The second console version of Gauntlet Legends, released in March of 2000. This version is often criticized for its extreme diversity from the original arcade version. Most of the levels have been down-sized, many objects features buggy physics, and lack of four-player cooperative play (omitting Multitap functionality) gave the port relatively bad ratings. The game retains the inventory system from the Nintendo 64 version, the two new realms, and extensive cheat codes.
