Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Gauntlet on the NES is not a straight copy of the arcade machine, and that's what makes it worth playing. Tengen kept the formula that turned Atari Games' 1985 cabinet into a smash, a top-down crawl through monster-choked mazes where your health drains away every second, and then built an entirely new adventure around it: 100 fresh levels and a real quest to see through to the end.

The four heroes are all here. Thor the Warrior hits hardest, Thyra the Valkyrie wears the best armor, Merlin the Wizard throws the strongest magic and Questor the Elf moves fastest, and choosing between them changes how every maze plays out. Ghosts, grunts, demons and sorcerers pour out of the corridors in swarms alongside some new additions to the enemy roster, and the familiar rhythm of grabbing keys, hoarding magic and scrambling for food before your health runs dry is as tense as ever. A second player can join in at the same time, and sharing those corridors means sharing the loot, which makes for plenty of friendly arguments over who gets the next plate of food.

The big change is the goal. Instead of an endless descent, the NES version gives you a destination: the Sacred Orb waiting in the 100th level. Hidden clue rooms scattered through the other 99 levels each hold a piece of the password that opens the way, so exploration matters and every secret room is worth chasing down. A password system also lets you save your progress, which turns a quarter-munching arcade experience into a quest you can work through over many evenings.

Tengen developed and released the game in 1988, and it is widely cited as the first NES game developed in the United States. That history, together with its smart reinvention of an arcade landmark, makes it a fascinating piece of the NES story. It's the version of Gauntlet with an ending to chase and a partner's seat on the couch.
