Item Description

Houdai Kudoki is the least popular boy at Sakurachi Academy until a trainee cupid named Ekoro, cramming for her angel exam, shoots him with a love arrow at thirty-two times the proper dose. Suddenly every girl on campus is chasing him, and unless he can find and confess to his one true love by the end of the day, the overdose will leave him unlucky in love forever. That is the premise of Gal*Gun: Double Peace, and it plays every bit of its absurdity with a straight face.

Underneath the anime comedy is a sharp on-rails shooter. Waves of love-struck classmates rush Houdai with confessions that drain his health, and his Pheromone Shot sends them swooning before they reach him. Zooming in reveals hidden items and secrets tucked into the scenery, the PS4 touchpad handles the game's interactive interludes, and Doki-Doki Mode breaks up the shooting with its own cheeky mini-game. Meanwhile the demon Kurona is out to make things worse, possessing students who have to be freed before the pheromones will work.

The “double” in the title is Shinobu and Maya, sisters who grew up with Houdai and secretly moonlight as demon hunters, and the story branches depending on which of them, or several other heroines, you pursue. Dialogue choices raise and lower affection, stages are picked from a list that changes which ones you see, and the result is a game built for replays, with more than seventy students to profile, requests from classmates to complete, a school shop run by the musician Aoi and multiple endings to unlock. There is even a panic button, the Mom's Arrived screen, which flips the display into a harmless-looking RPG on PlayStation 4.

Developer Inti Creates is the studio behind Mega Man Zero, Azure Striker Gunvolt and Blaster Master Zero, and that arcade craftsmanship shows in the tight aiming and quick stages. Double Peace follows the original Gal*Gun and reached the West through PQube in 2016, an unapologetically fan-service-heavy comedy that few publishers would have localized. As a PlayStation 4 cult curiosity, it is a conversation piece for collectors of offbeat Japanese games.
