Item Description

Before Galaga, there was Galaxian, and the swooping attack patterns that made Namco's later shooter famous begin here. A formation of aliens hovers at the top of the screen, gently shifting side to side, until individual attackers peel away and dive at your Galaxip in sweeping arcs, firing as they come. Unlike the marching rows of Space Invaders, these aliens fly, and that sense of motion made Galaxian feel thrillingly alive.

The heart of the game is choosing your moment. Yellow Flagships sit at the top of the formation with red escorts beside them, and when a Flagship dives with its escorts, taking out the escorts first and then the Flagship itself is the classic route to a big score. You get one shot on screen at a time, so every miss leaves you exposed while the next attacker closes in. It is a simple rule that makes each wave tense and every hit satisfying.

Namco released Galaxian in arcades in 1979, and it was one of the first games to use full-color sprites, a striking upgrade from the monochrome and overlay-colored screens of the era. Its success led directly to Galaga in 1981. Atari's 1982 conversion for the 5200 brings the formation and dive-bombing attacks to the console's analog controller, and it is a great way to experience the shooter that bridged Space Invaders and Galaga on original hardware.
