Item Description

Most Genesis shooters armed you with lasers. Gadget Twins gives you a boxing glove on a spring. Bop and Bump, a pair of cartoon flying machines in red and blue, are summoned by the Gadget King after the villainous Thump creeps into his castle and steals the royal gem, and getting it back means flying through six stages over air and water: Gadget Bay, Zeppelin Attack, The Lost City, Sub Attack, The Crystal Lake and finally Thump's World.

The screen scrolls on its own, but you can fly freely in every direction, punching up, down, left or right with that extendable glove. Defeated enemies and treasure chests scattered through each stage give up coins, and the shop is where the strategy comes in: up to ten weapons are on offer, but only four can be equipped at once, so you're always tailoring your loadout to the stage ahead. Timed bonus stages challenge you to crack open every chest before the clock runs out.

The two-player mode has a mischievous streak. Player two takes control of Bump, and the twins can attack each other and pinch each other's weapons and coins, turning a rescue mission into a friendly rivalry. Barry Leitch, the composer best known for the Top Gear racing games, wrote the music, and the bright, cartoony graphics and smooth animation drew praise even from reviewers who were mixed on the game overall. Mega magazine summed it up as a pleasant and whimsical change from blasting ugly aliens.

Developed by Imagitec Design and published by GameTek in 1992, it's a rare Genesis shooter built on charm instead of firepower. Next to the system's heavy-metal blasters, it's the cheerful oddball, and one that's even more fun when someone on the other controller is trying to steal your coins.

About the game

Late one night, the malevolent Thump enters the Gadget Kingdom's castle and steals the Gadget King's gem. The king wakes up the next morning to find that his gem was stolen. The king then summons Bop and Bump to reclaim his stolen possession from Thump. Gameplay consists of flying through six air and water levels: Gadget Bay, Zeppelin Attack, The Lost City, Sub Attack, The Crystal Lake and Thump's World. Although the game continually scrolls throughout its stages, the player can fly in all directions on the screen. Bop and Bump come equipped with a spring glove mechanism that lets the player punch either up, down, right or left, which is used to defeat enemies. Defeated enemies drop coins. There are also chests littered throughout the stages which contain coins also. These coins can be spent at a shop where the player can purchase upgrades. The game also contains bonus stages where the objective is to open all the chests in a limited amount of time.
