Item Description

Professor Farnsworth has sold Planet Express to Mom, and with it, more than half of Earth. That's the setup for the 2003 Futurama game, and from the first cutscene it sounds exactly like the show, because in every way that counts it is the show. Futurama writer and producer J. Stewart Burns wrote an original story, David X. Cohen directed the voice sessions, and the regular cast came back to perform it: Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche and David Herman.

The plan is pure Futurama logic: travel back in time and stop the sale before Mom and her death bot troopers enslave humanity. Each member of the crew plays differently. Fry handles the third-person shooting with a growing arsenal of guns, Bender's levels lean into platforming, Leela settles things hand to hand, and Dr. Zoidberg gets a short segment all his own. Even the collectibles are in character, with dollars for Fry, Robobium for Bender, gold bars for Leela and fish skeletons for Zoidberg.

Critics at the time were rough on the controls and camera but loved the writing, and that writing got a second life. The game's 28 minutes of new animation were good enough that the cutscenes, along with some gameplay footage, were cut together into a roughly half-hour feature called Futurama: The Lost Adventure and released with the 2008 direct-to-DVD movie The Beast with a Billion Backs. David X. Cohen called it “the 73rd episode.” Because the studio behind the game, Unique Development Studios, had closed, the team captured that footage from an Xbox running the game.

That makes this disc the original home of an official Futurama story, the same Xbox version the DVD footage was recorded from. Hearing the cast riff through an all-new adventure, in a cel-shaded world built to match the show's look, is the reason to own it, and the reason it still turns heads among fans who thought they had seen every episode.
