Item Description

Five empty homes sit at the top of the screen, and between them and your frog lie a busy highway and a river that wants to drown you. Frogger's genius is that you already understand the whole game the moment you see it, and it still keeps finding ways to surprise you. First you dodge lanes of cars and trucks, each moving at its own speed. Then you hop onto floating logs and the backs of turtles that may dive underwater without warning, timing each jump while the current carries you toward the edge of the screen.

Every crossing is a little puzzle of rhythm and nerve. Wait for the gap, hop forward, sometimes hop back, and look for the safest path across a river that is never quite the same twice. Fill all five homes and the next round arrives faster, with less room for error, which is exactly why Frogger is so hard to put down. One more frog always feels possible.

Konami's 1981 arcade game was a worldwide hit, distributed in North America by Sega/Gremlin, and Parker Brothers brought it home on a range of systems. The 5200 version is based on Parker's Atari 8-bit release, and the 5200's analog joystick takes on the hop-by-hop movement. Frogger became part of pop culture so thoroughly that it even inspired an entire episode of Seinfeld. It is about the easiest arcade classic to hand to anyone, and on the 5200 it is a natural pick for quick, competitive turns trading the controller for high scores.

About the game

Your task in this arcade game is to guide a frog across a treacherous road and river, and to safety at the top of the screen. Both these sections are fraught with a variety of hazards, each of which will kill the frog and cost you a life if contact is made. The Atari 8-bit version was later ported to the Atari 5200.
