Somewhere near Camp Crystal Lake the phone line is dead, the car is missing its battery, and a heavy footstep just crunched outside the cabin window. That dread is the whole engine of Friday the 13th: The Game, IllFonic's 2017 adaptation of the slasher series. It started life as a Kickstarter project called Summer Camp, secured the official license from Sean S. Cunningham, and became a cult favorite by doing something no horror game had tried at that scale: it put seven players in the counselors' sneakers and handed the hockey mask to the eighth.
Playing a counselor means being weak, noisy and outmatched. You scramble through cabins for car parts, boat fuel or a working phone to call the police, set bear traps, throw firecrackers to stun Jason and hold your breath while hiding in a closet. If you die or escape, a CB radio call can bring you back as Tommy Jarvis, the one character who can actually kill Jason. Pulling that off takes a plan straight out of the films, with a female counselor raiding Jason's shack for Pamela Voorhees's sweater to distract him at exactly the right moment.
On the other side, Jason is pure menace. He can sense frightened counselors, teleport across the map and smash through doors, and players can choose among nine versions of him drawn from across the series. Kane Hodder performed the motion capture, Tom Savini designed kill animations, and Harry Manfredini, the films' composer, scored the game, so that whispering “ki ki ki, ma ma ma” cue lands exactly as it should. Matches play out across Camp Crystal Lake, Packanack Lodge and Higgins Haven, with Jarvis House and Pinehurst added later, while the Virtual Cabin hides a trove of franchise Easter eggs.
Critics were split, pointing to bugs and balance problems, but players embraced it as a campfire-story party game. A rights dispute halted new content in 2018, the game left digital storefronts at the end of 2023, and its official online services closed at the end of 2024, so its online heart is now history. What survives is a lovingly made slasher experiment, and a physical copy is how it stays on a horror shelf.
