Item Description

A blue bus drifts over an island, a hundred players leap out, and the storm starts closing in. Few games have taken over popular culture the way Fortnite did after Epic Games added its Battle Royale mode in September 2017, just a couple of months after the original Save the World campaign, a co-op mission game about building forts and fending off hordes of Husks, arrived in early access. Battle Royale borrowed that game's building tools and its bright, cartoonish style, and within a year it was a phenomenon on playgrounds, in living rooms and on streaming channels everywhere.

Building is what set it apart. Swing your pickaxe at trees, walls and cars to harvest wood, brick and metal, then throw up walls, ramps, floors and roofs in the middle of a firefight. High-level matches turned into lightning-fast architectural duels, with players building towering structures in seconds to gain the high ground, and that creative dimension gave the genre something entirely new. For players who prefer straight gunfights, Zero Build mode later removed construction altogether, and the console version even added two-player split-screen for couch duos.

Fortnite also turned the map itself into a story. Seasons reshaped the island with new locations, vehicles and mysteries, and locations like Tilted Towers and Loot Lake became part of gaming vocabulary. The game staged live events nobody had seen before, from the black hole that swallowed the entire map at the end of Chapter 1 in October 2019 to in-game concerts by Marshmello and Travis Scott that drew millions of players at once. Crossovers with Marvel, Star Wars and countless other franchises made the island a meeting point for pop culture, and Creative mode opened the door to player-made games of every kind.

Fortnite was built from day one as an online game, and its battle royale has always been free to play, which makes a physical Xbox One release a curious artifact of its era. It is a shelf-sized reminder of the moment a quirky co-op survival project turned into the most talked-about game in the world, and of the season, the skin and the Victory Royale that each player remembers from those first years on the island.
