Item Description

Folklore opens in Doolin, a foggy village on the Irish coast where the boundary between the living world and the Netherworld, the realm of the dead, has worn dangerously thin. Developed by Game Republic and published by Sony, it was among the most visually distinctive action RPGs of the PlayStation 3's early library, and it tells its mystery twice over through two alternating protagonists. Ellen is a young woman drawn to Doolin by a letter from her mother, who supposedly died years earlier; Keats is an editor at an occult magazine who receives a plea for help he cannot ignore. Their investigations interlock chapter by chapter, and seeing the same events from both sides gives the game a layered, almost literary quality few of its contemporaries attempted.

The Netherworld is where the art direction takes over. Drawing on Celtic folklore and mythology, Game Republic built realms full of grotesque, beautiful and deeply strange creatures called Folks, from the glowing Faery Realm to the battle-scarred Warcadia. Combat revolves around capturing them: weaken a Folk, then yank the Sixaxis controller upward to tear its soul free, a motion-control flourish that became the game's signature. Captured Folks are mapped to the face buttons and summoned as attacks, shields and tools, so every new creature widens your arsenal and the urge to explore keeps building.

The story is told with the same confidence, mixing full cutscenes with comic-book-style panels that suit its storybook mood, and a haunting soundtrack holds the whole thing together. Folklore is atmospheric, strange and unhurried in the best sense, and it never tries to be anything other than itself.

It was no sales giant at launch, but it earned a devoted following among players looking for something different from the PS3's action-heavy lineup, and it has never been remastered for later PlayStation hardware. Visiting Doolin still means switching on a PS3, and the trip rewards anyone curious about the stranger, more experimental side of Sony's early catalog.
