Item Description

The Flintstones meet The Jetsons in this surprisingly ambitious Taito platformer. A scientist from the 30th century named Dr. Butler wants prehistoric animals for his zoo, so he swipes Fred's pet Dino and Barney's pet Hoppy and leaves the Great Gazoo's time machine in pieces. Only Fred can see Gazoo, so it falls to him to recover every missing part and chase Butler into the future.

Each stage Fred clears hands back another piece of the time machine for Gazoo to weld together, and each one ends with a boss. Fred controls cleanly, swinging his club at anything that gets in his way and hauling himself up onto ledges, which opens up the levels vertically and gives the platforming a nice sense of momentum. Along the way he crosses paths with Wilma, Barney and Betty, and the final stretch in the future even brings in George Jetson, a crossover that Hanna-Barbera fans will get a kick out of.

Released in North America at the end of 1991, The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy came from the same Taito that had a real touch with licensed NES games, and it shows. The sprites are large and lively, the backgrounds are bright and full of cartoon detail, and the whole game looks like Saturday morning television. GamePro praised its graphics, gameplay and number of levels, though it was less kind to the music, and AllGame called it a first-rate platformer whose colorful visuals capture the cartoon.

Licensed cartoon games on the NES were often rushed, forgettable affairs, and this one stands out because it plays like a proper platformer that also happens to star Fred Flintstone. It is the first of Taito's two NES Flintstones adventures, followed later by Surprise at Dinosaur Peak, and the natural starting point for seeing Bedrock done right on 8-bit hardware.
