Item Description

Long before Treasure Island sent Jim Hawkins chasing a buried fortune, there was the man who buried it. Flint: Treasure of Oblivion, from French studio Savage Level and publisher Microids, imagines the earlier adventures of Captain Flint, the fearsome pirate whose gold drives Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, during the golden age of piracy. With his first mate Billy Bones at his side, Flint chases a treasure that carries him across five chapters, from the port of Saint-Malo in France to ancient temples hidden in the jungles of Central America.

The presentation is what you notice first. The story unfolds through dynamic comic-book panels laid right over the action, complete with speech bubbles and splashy onomatopoeia, so the whole adventure reads like a graphic novel you get to play. Built in Unreal Engine 5, the cities, camps, jungles and caves have a rich, painterly look that gives each chapter a strong sense of place.

Fights are turn-based tactical battles with crews of up to fifteen pirates on the field. Cards trigger your crew's skills and attributes, while dice, rolled in the open rather than hidden behind percentages, decide whether each action lands, and you can improve those dice as your sailors gain experience. More than thirty recruitable characters fill roles such as surgeon, who patches up the wounded, and lookout, who spots incoming attacks and disrupts them. Nearly fifty weapons and accessories, from cutlasses and pistols to grenades and armor, round out the loadouts, and gold can be spent on gear or shared out among the crew as experience.

Critics adored the art direction but were divided on how clearly the card and dice systems are explained, so it rewards patient players who like to dig into a tactics game's mechanics. If you have ever wanted a pirate story told like a lavish bande dessinée, Flint is an unusual and handsome voyage on PlayStation 5.
