Item Description

Four friends, one convertible and a kingdom on the brink: Final Fantasy XV opens like a road trip and slowly becomes something much heavier. Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum sets out in the royal car, the Regalia, with his sworn companions Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, bound for his wedding to the Oracle Lunafreya. Then the Niflheim empire seizes the capital of Insomnia during peace talks, and a lighthearted drive turns into a journey to reclaim a throne.

The friendship is the heart of the game, and the small rituals make it land. You drive the open roads of Lucis with the radio playing, stop for upgrades and gossip with mechanic Cindy at Hammerhead, and make camp each night, where Ignis cooks meals that grant battle bonuses and Prompto's snapshots of the day's adventure are shared around the fire. Combat is fast and real time, built around Noctis warping across the battlefield to strike, switching between weapons from his royal Armiger and triggering team attacks with his friends. Monster hunts, chocobo riding and summons of the Astrals, including Titan, Ramuh and Leviathan, give the world its sense of grand fantasy.

Its road to release was famously long. The game began life as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, announced in 2006, before being reborn as Final Fantasy XV under director Hajime Tabata and launching in 2016. Yoko Shimomura's sweeping score sits alongside Florence + the Machine's cover of "Stand By Me", and the world grew around it through the Kingsglaive film and the Brotherhood anime. The story divided fans, but the bond between the four friends and the bittersweet ending stay with people for a long time.

The Royal Edition, released in 2018, is the expanded version of the game. It added a much larger exploration of the ruined Insomnia in the final chapter, a royal boat for sailing the seas of Eos, a first-person camera and a new ultimate ability for Noctis. For anyone who wants Noctis's journey with its endgame filled out, this is the edition to own.
