Item Description

Four friends, a black convertible and an open road: Final Fantasy XV starts as a road trip, and that is what makes it so endearing. Prince Noctis sets out from the crown city of Insomnia with his companions Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, bound for his wedding to Lunafreya, only for the Niflheim empire to strike the capital while they are away. The bond between the four carries the story from there: the banter in the Regalia, the photos Prompto snaps and shares at camp, and the dishes Ignis cooks over every campfire, each one granting a stat boost for the next day on the road.

Combat is fast and flashy. Noctis summons a spectral arsenal of royal weapons, warps across the battlefield to strike from a distance, and teams up with his friends for Link Strikes and special techniques. Chocobo rides, fishing spots, dungeons and towering beasts fill the open world of Lucis, and Yoko Shimomura's score gives it all a sweeping, operatic feel. The game had one of the longest development histories in the series, beginning life as Final Fantasy Versus XIII before Hajime Tabata took over as director and shaped it into the game it became.

The Royal Edition, released in 2018, is the expanded version of the game. Its Royal Pack opens up the ruins of Insomnia in the final act with new side quests, new enemies and bosses such as Omega, and more to explore. It also adds the Royal Vessel, a fully controllable boat for sailing between Cape Caem and Altissia with fishing along the way, Armiger Unleashed for devastating new attacks once you have gathered the royal arms, and a first-person camera that puts you directly in Noctis's shoes.

The road-trip opening and the friendships at its heart are what players remember most, and the Royal Edition gives that journey a bigger final act on PlayStation 4, with a ruined Insomnia worth exploring before the last campfire.
