Item Description

A prince, his three best friends and a black convertible that breaks down before the opening credits finish: Final Fantasy XV begins less like an epic and more like a road trip, and that is its charm. Noctis Lucis Caelum leaves the crown city of Insomnia with his bodyguard Gladiolus, his advisor Ignis and his best friend Prompto, bound for his wedding to Lunafreya, the Oracle, and the four have barely pushed the Regalia to the garage at Hammerhead when the empire of Niflheim strikes his home. The trip becomes a quest to gather the royal arms of his ancestors and reclaim the throne, with the smiling, unsettling Ardyn Izunia turning up at every stop.

Combat is fast and real-time. Noctis summons weapons out of thin air, warp-strikes across the battlefield in a flash of blue crystal, phases through attacks and links up with his friends for team strikes, while magic is crafted from elemental energy and can scorch your own party if you aim carelessly. The world of Lucis rewards wandering: monster hunts from diner tipsters, chocobos to rent, fishing spots, roadside dungeons and daemons that stalk the roads after dark. At night the party camps, Ignis cooks recipes you discover on the road, and Prompto shares the photos he snapped that day, little moments that make the brotherhood feel real.

Its history is a saga of its own. The game was first announced in 2006 as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, spent years in development and was reborn under director Hajime Tabata as the fifteenth numbered entry, arriving in 2016 alongside the Kingsglaive film and the Brotherhood anime. Yoko Shimomura's score is gorgeous, Florence + the Machine's cover of “Stand by Me” plays over the road, and later chapters carry the boys to the water city of Altissia and a confrontation with Leviathan that is pure Final Fantasy spectacle.

The Day One Edition was Square Enix's first-wave launch printing of the game. It is the original 2016 release of a Final Fantasy that took a decade to reach players, and for many of them the four friends around the campfire are what they remember most.
