Item Description

A broken-down car, a hot desert highway and four friends pushing it toward the nearest garage while a Florence + the Machine cover of "Stand By Me" plays: that is how Final Fantasy XV introduces itself, and it tells you right away that this will be a different kind of Final Fantasy. Square Enix's 2016 adventure is a road trip first and a war story second, and that is exactly what gives it its heart.

Noctis Lucis Caelum, crown prince of Lucis, sets out from the crystal-guarded capital of Insomnia to marry Lunafreya, the Oracle, as part of a peace treaty with the empire of Niflheim. He has barely left home when the treaty turns out to be a trap: the city falls, the Crystal is taken and the king is gone. Riding along are his sworn shield Gladiolus, the meticulous strategist Ignis and the irrepressible Prompto, and the bond between those four carries the story through Cid and Cindy's garage at Hammerhead, the wilds of Duscae and the canals of Altissia, with the enigmatic Ardyn Izunia watching from the sidelines.

Combat is fast and fully real-time. Noctis warps across the battlefield in a flash of blue, summons spectral Royal Arms recovered from the tombs of his ancestors and links up with his friends for team attacks, while the Astrals, colossal gods like Titan and Ramuh, can be called down in breathtaking moments. Between fights the game lives in the details: camping under the stars, Ignis cooking recipes that grant stat bonuses, Prompto's photos of the day's adventures to look through each night, chocobo riding, fishing, monster hunts and cruising in the Regalia with classic Final Fantasy music on the car stereo. Yoko Shimomura's score, with its soaring main theme "Somnus", gives the whole journey real grandeur.

Final Fantasy XV spent a decade in development, beginning life as Final Fantasy Versus XIII before director Hajime Tabata carried it to release. Reception was strong but honest about its flaws, with high praise for the open world and the friendship at its center, and criticism of a more linear, hurried final act. The road trip is what people remember, and it is the most personal portrait of friendship the series has attempted: four young men, one car, and a kingdom to win back.
