Item Description

Few games get a second chance, and fewer use it like Final Fantasy XIV. The original 2010 version disappointed so badly that Square Enix handed it to producer and director Naoki Yoshida, whose team kept the old servers running while rebuilding the entire game from scratch, then wrote the old world's destruction into the story itself. The lesser moon Dalamud cracks open, the elder primal Bahamut tears free, and Eorzea is plunged into the Seventh Umbral Era. A Realm Reborn, the 2013 relaunch that reached PlayStation 4 the following year, is named for that comeback.

Your adventurer starts in one of three city-states, the forest nation of Gridania, the pirate port of Limsa Lominsa or the desert merchant city of Ul'dah, and is soon pulled into the Scions of the Seventh Dawn's struggle against the Garlean Empire and the primals: Ifrit, Titan and Garuda, beast-tribe gods summoned into terrifying reality. The Armoury System is its masterstroke. One character can learn every class simply by changing weapons, so the gladiator who tanks a dungeon in the afternoon can be a conjurer healing it at night, eventually growing into classic jobs like Paladin, Dragoon, Black Mage and White Mage. Chocobo companions, airships, FATE events breaking out across the map and the Binding Coil of Bahamut raids make Eorzea feel like a Final Fantasy you get to live inside.

Masayoshi Soken's music carries enormous weight, from the city themes to primal battles that turn into rock anthems, and the story Yoshida's team began here grows across Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker and Dawntrail into one of the most celebrated narratives in the series. Every one of those expansions builds on the foundation laid in A Realm Reborn.

It was built as an online game through and through, a subscription MMO designed so PlayStation and PC players share the same worlds, and it was never meant to be played alone in the traditional sense. That makes this PlayStation 4 release a fascinating piece of history to hold: the edition that brought Eorzea to the PS4 generation and marked the moment a failed launch became Final Fantasy's great redemption story.
