Item Description

Final Fantasy XIII opens aboard a train full of condemned civilians, and within minutes a former soldier named Lightning is fighting her way off it. The setting is Cocoon, a gleaming shell-world floating above the wilderness of Gran Pulse, ruled by a government called the Sanctum and sustained by godlike beings known as fal'Cie. When a fal'Cie from Pulse is discovered inside Cocoon, the Sanctum begins the Purge, exiling anyone who might have been contaminated, and six strangers end up branded as l'Cie: servants handed a task they barely understand, with crystal stasis waiting if they succeed and a monstrous fate if they fail.

The cast carries that premise. Lightning is steel on the outside and fiercely protective underneath; Snow Villiers is a loud, idealistic hero determined to save his fiancée Serah, Lightning's sister; Sazh Katzroy brings warmth and comic relief, with a chocobo chick nesting in his hair, while hiding real heartbreak; Hope Estheim grows from a frightened teenager into someone the party depends on; and Vanille and Fang, two women from Gran Pulse, hold the secrets that tie the story together.

Combat is where XIII shines brightest. Battles run in real time on the Active Time Battle gauge, with you directing the party leader while the others act on the roles you assign. Paradigm Shifts swap the whole party's setup on the fly between Commando, Ravager, Sentinel, Medic, Synergist and Saboteur, so one fight can swing from all-out assault to emergency healing to buffs and debuffs within seconds. Push an enemy's stagger gauge to the breaking point and its defenses collapse, turning every major battle into a puzzle of tempo. Characters grow through the Crystarium, and each of the six can summon an Eidolon with its own Gestalt form, from Snow's Shiva sisters combining into a motorcycle to Lightning's Odin becoming a charging steed.

The first ten chapters are famously linear, a corridor that teaches the battle system as the story races ahead, and then the game throws the doors open when the party reaches the Archylte Steppe on Gran Pulse, with dozens of hunting missions, roaming giants like the Adamantoise and some of the hardest fights in the series. Masashi Hamauzu's score, from the driving battle theme “Blinded by Light” to the sweeping music of Gran Pulse, is a highlight from start to finish. The first numbered Final Fantasy made for PlayStation 3, it launched a trilogy that continued in Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns and turned Lightning into a lasting fan favorite. If you only know XIII from the arguments about its corridors, the combat is the reason to give it a proper run.

About the game

Final Fantasy XIII is a single-player Japanese role-playing game and the thirteenth main entry in the Final Fantasy series. Combat uses a real-time variant of the series' Active Time Battle system, in which the player directs one lead character while the Paradigm system lets the party switch between combat roles such as attacker, healer, and support. Character growth is handled through the Crystarium, a grid-based progression system that unlocks abilities and stat bonuses. Set across the floating world of Cocoon and the wilderness of Gran Pulse, the game combines science fiction and fantasy elements with series staples like summoned creatures and airships. It was followed by two sequels, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
