Item Description

Lightning does not wait for permission. When the government of the floating world of Cocoon starts deporting citizens in a Purge over contact with Gran Pulse, the wild world below, the former soldier fights her way free aboard the Purge train and straight into a crisis that will brand her and five strangers as l'Cie, people chosen by the godlike fal'Cie to fulfill a task they do not understand and cannot refuse. Fail, and they become monsters. Succeed, and they turn to crystal. Final Fantasy XIII starts at a sprint and rarely lets up.

The battle system is the main event. Instead of directing every party member, you control the leader while the others follow the Paradigm you set, a combination of roles such as Commando, Ravager, Medic and Sentinel, and the art lies in shifting paradigms at exactly the right instant. Pile on Ravager hits to drive an enemy's chain gauge toward Stagger, swap to Commandos for the damage, then flip to Medics before the counterattack lands. It is fast, tactical and a little like conducting, and the toughest fights on Gran Pulse demand real planning. Characters grow through the Crystarium, and the summons, called Eidolons, can shift into a Gestalt form; Snow's Eidolons, the Shiva sisters, combine into a motorcycle.

The cast carries the story: Lightning; Snow Villiers, the brash leader of a resistance group and fiance of Lightning's sister Serah; Sazh Katzroy, a pilot with a baby chocobo nesting in his afro; the teenage Hope Estheim; and Oerba Dia Vanille and Oerba Yun Fang, whose origins tie everything back to Pulse. Masashi Hamauzu's score swings from soaring orchestral pieces to the driving battle theme "Blinded by Light," and the presentation was a showcase for what the PlayStation 3 could do.

Its structure was famously divisive. The first half is a long, guided corridor of story, and only when the party reaches Gran Pulse does the world open into the vast Archylte Steppe and dozens of optional hunts. Plenty of players think that payoff is worth the wait, and the battle system has aged better than the arguments about it. This is also the opening chapter of a trilogy, followed by Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns, so it is where Lightning's story begins.

About the game

Final Fantasy XIII is a single-player Japanese role-playing game and the thirteenth main entry in the Final Fantasy series. Combat uses a real-time variant of the series' Active Time Battle system, in which the player directs one lead character while the Paradigm system lets the party switch between combat roles such as attacker, healer, and support. Character growth is handled through the Crystarium, a grid-based progression system that unlocks abilities and stat bonuses. Set across the floating world of Cocoon and the wilderness of Gran Pulse, the game combines science fiction and fantasy elements with series staples like summoned creatures and airships. It was followed by two sequels, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
