Item Description

Final Fantasy XII is the series at its most political. Set in Ivalice, the same world that hosts Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story, it opens with the small desert kingdom of Dalmasca crushed between two empires and its royal capital, Rabanastre, under Archadian occupation. Street urchin Vaan dreams of becoming a sky pirate, and he falls in with a remarkable group: the dashing sky pirate Balthier and his Viera partner Fran, the disgraced knight Basch, Vaan's friend Penelo and Princess Ashe, the heir everyone believed was dead. The plot is less about saving the world than reclaiming a nation, and its court intrigue and quiet betrayals give it a mature, almost Shakespearean texture.

The battle system was a bold break with tradition. Fights happen right on the field with no transition screens, and the Gambit system lets you program each ally with simple if-then rules, such as healing anyone below a certain HP or targeting the nearest flying enemy. Building a party that runs like a well-tuned machine, then stepping in at the right moment, is deeply satisfying. The hunt board adds a long list of optional marks to track down across Ivalice, and some of them are among the toughest fights in the game.

The Zodiac Age is built on the International Zodiac Job System version that had previously stayed in Japan. Each character chooses two of twelve jobs, each with its own license board, which makes party building far more strategic than in the original release. Speed Mode lets you fast-forward through travel and grinding, Trial Mode offers up to 100 consecutive battles against increasingly tough foes, and the soundtrack has been newly recorded, with the option to switch back to the original. Hitoshi Sakimoto's sweeping score has never sounded grander.

As a PlayStation 4 remaster, it is the best way to experience Ivalice today, with high-definition visuals, quicker pacing and all the depth the original's fans spent years praising. If you skipped Final Fantasy XII on the PS2, The Zodiac Age is the version that finally gives this ambitious entry the audience it deserves.
