Item Description

“Listen to my story. This may be our last chance.” Tidus speaks those words beside a campfire on the edge of a ruined Zanarkand, and Final Fantasy X unfolds from there into one of the most affecting stories in the series: a star blitzball player torn from his own world by the monstrous Sin and washed up in Spira, a land where a young summoner named Yuna is setting out on a pilgrimage that everyone around her knows may cost her life. This HD Remaster, built by Virtuos for Square Enix, gathers that journey and its sequel together, and on PlayStation 3 both games share a single disc.

Final Fantasy X was the series' first full step into voice acting and fully 3D worlds, and its Conditional Turn-Based battles still feel brilliantly readable. A turn-order list shows exactly who acts next, and you can swap any guardian into the fight mid-battle, so Wakka's blitzball, Lulu's black magic, Kimahri's borrowed enemy skills, Auron's armor-breaking sword and Rikku's item mixing all get their moment. Characters grow across the Sphere Grid, a sprawling board you travel to unlock stats and abilities, and the score by Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano includes “To Zanarkand,” a piano piece countless players can hum from memory.

Final Fantasy X-2 then did something no mainline Final Fantasy had done before: it returned to the same world as a direct sequel. Two years after Sin's defeat, Yuna has traded her summoner's robes for a pair of pistols and joined Rikku and the newcomer Paine as the Gullwings, a crew of sphere hunters roaming a Spira that is busy reinventing itself. The Dressphere system lets all three change jobs in the middle of a battle, chaining Garment Grid bonuses as they go, and the breezy, mission-based structure rewards poking into every corner in pursuit of a perfect completion percentage. It is lighter, faster and more playful than X, and that contrast is part of the charm.

Both games are based on the International versions that were previously released only in Japan and Europe. That means X's Expert Sphere Grid, the optional Dark Aeons and the superboss Penance, plus X-2's Last Mission epilogue and the Creature Creator, which lets you recruit monsters to fight beside the Gullwings. Character models were remastered and the soundtrack rearranged, and the short film Eternal Calm bridges the two stories. On PlayStation 3 that adds up to the whole Spira saga, both games and all the extra content, in one place.
