Item Description

“Listen to my story.” Final Fantasy X opens with Tidus, a star blitzball player from the glittering city of Zanarkand, watching his home torn apart by a colossal creature called Sin and waking in Spira, a world a thousand years removed from the one he knew. There he falls in with Yuna, a young summoner beginning the pilgrimage that is supposed to bring the Calm, and her guardians: the stoic swordsman Auron, the black mage Lulu, the blitzball captain Wakka, the Ronso warrior Kimahri and, before long, the irrepressible Al Bhed girl Rikku. Its story of faith, sacrifice and a religion built on a lie still lands with surprising force.

This was the series' first fully voiced adventure and its first step onto PlayStation 2, and it reinvented the battle system along the way. Conditional Turn-Based Battle shows you exactly who acts next, and you can swap party members mid-fight, so every character has a job: Wakka for flyers, Lulu for elemental foes, Auron for armor. The Sphere Grid replaces traditional leveling with a sprawling board you move across to unlock stats and abilities, aeons like Valefor, Ifrit, Ixion and Bahamut fight in your place, and blitzball is an entire underwater sports league tucked inside an RPG. Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano wrote the music, from “To Zanarkand” to the hymn that follows Yuna everywhere.

Final Fantasy X-2 picks up two years later and changes its tune completely. Yuna, Rikku and newcomer Paine are now the Gullwings, sphere hunters chasing clues to a mysterious figure who looks like Tidus, and battles return to a fast Active Time format where dresspheres let each heroine swap jobs, Gunner to Black Mage to Samurai, in the middle of a fight. It is brighter and more playful, built around missions, side stories and multiple endings.

This HD Remaster is based on the International versions once limited to Japan and Europe, which means the Expert Sphere Grid, the Dark Aeons and the Penance superboss in X, plus X-2's Last Mission epilogue and the monster-recruiting Creature Creator. On PlayStation 4 you can switch between the remastered soundtrack and the original score, and the pair together easily runs past a hundred hours. It is the best way to own both halves of Yuna's story on one shelf.
