Item Description

The first time "To Zanarkand" plays over that lone piano, Final Fantasy X tells you this will be a story about loss. Tidus, a star blitzball player from the glittering city of Zanarkand, is swallowed by the colossal creature Sin and wakes up in Spira, a world where his home has been a ruin for a thousand years. He falls in with Yuna, a young summoner beginning a pilgrimage to defeat Sin, and her guardians: the blitzball captain Wakka, the black mage Lulu, the silent Ronso Kimahri, the legendary warrior Auron and the irrepressible Al Bhed Rikku.

Square's 2001 RPG was a turning point for the series: the first mainline Final Fantasy on PlayStation 2, the first built from fully 3D environments rather than pre-rendered backgrounds, and the first with voice acting. Spira is a world of sun-bleached coasts, dense jungle and ancient ruins, from the island village of Besaid and the stadium city of Luca to the storm-lashed Thunder Plains and the crystalline forest of Macalania, and beneath its beauty lies a religion built on grief and denial that the story peels back one layer at a time.

Its Conditional Turn-Based Battle system lays out the upcoming turn order on screen, turning every fight into a small tactical puzzle, and you can swap any party member in mid-battle so everyone has a role to play. Aeons, the summoned beasts Yuna calls on, fight under your direct control, Overdrives give each character a flashy finishing move, and the Sphere Grid lets you chart each hero's growth across a massive board of abilities. Then there is blitzball, a full underwater sports game with its own player recruitment and leagues that some players sink dozens of hours into.

Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano's score carries the whole journey, from the Hymn of the Fayth to the final battle, and the romance between Tidus and Yuna gives the adventure an emotional core few RPGs of the era matched. It sold in enormous numbers and led to the series' first direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, but nothing quite replaces playing the original pilgrimage on the hardware it was made for.
