Item Description

Final Fantasy VII Remake opens exactly where the 1997 original did, with a train pulling into Midgar and Avalanche on its way to bomb a Mako reactor, and then it starts doing things the PlayStation original never could. Tetsuya Nomura's team took the opening stretch of that legendary RPG, the escape from Midgar, and expanded it into a complete game of its own, the first part of a multi-game retelling. Cloud Strife, Barret Wallace, Tifa Lockhart and Aerith Gainsborough have never looked so alive, and Midgar, its plates looming over the slums below, finally feels as vast as players always imagined.

The combat is a clever hybrid. You fight in real time, slashing, dodging and blocking, and every hit fills the ATB gauge that powers abilities, spells and items. Spending it slows the action to a crawl so you can pick commands, and switching between party members lets you play Barret's long-range gun-arm, Tifa's martial-arts combos and Aerith's magic in the same fight. Pressuring enemies until they stagger opens the door to massive damage, and the materia system returns so you can tailor every character's spells and support. A Classic mode handles the action side automatically for players who would rather focus on commands.

Midgar's familiar places come back richer than ever. Sector 7's slums have a real community around Tifa's Seventh Heaven bar, Avalanche members Jessie, Biggs and Wedge finally get room to become real characters, and Wall Market, ruled by Don Corneo, is a riot of neon, gambling and one unforgettable dance number at the Honeybee Inn. The soundtrack takes Nobuo Uematsu's original melodies into lavish new arrangements, and bosses like the Scorpion Sentinel and Hell House turn fond memories into huge set-piece fights.

It is also more than a straight remake. Spectral figures called the Whispers seem determined to keep events on their original path, and the story takes some bold turns that set up the rest of the trilogy. On PlayStation 4, where it launched in 2020, it is the start of the modern Final Fantasy VII saga and a gorgeous way to return to the city where it all began.
