Midgar was only the beginning. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second game in Square Enix's three-part reimagining of the 1997 classic, throws open the gates of the city and lets Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret and Red XIII loose on a world that feels enormous in a way the original's overworld could only suggest. The party is on the trail of Sephiroth, and it leads through the grasslands outside Kalm, the military port of Junon, the beaches of Costa del Sol, the scorched country around Corel and the observatory town of Cosmo Canyon.

Each region is an open space packed with things to find, and each comes with its own chocobo and its own way of getting around. Queen's Blood, a card game you can challenge players to all over the world, became one of the most talked-about side attractions of the whole remake project, and the Gold Saucer arrives as a full amusement park of minigames. Yuffie and Cait Sith join as playable characters, and a flashback to Nibelheim lets you play through Cloud's own memory of Sephiroth's fall.

Combat builds on Remake's hybrid of real-time action and ATB commands, where you slow the action to choose abilities, spells and items. Rebirth's big addition is synergy: paired characters can trigger quick Synergy Skills on the fly and unleash cinematic Synergy Abilities once their gauges fill, which makes switching between party members feel like a real partnership. Red XIII's counter-focused fighting style and Cait Sith riding his giant moogle show how much variety the expanded cast brings.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi's team handles the original's most famous moments with care while steering the story somewhere new, and the soundtrack threads the old melodies through a huge range of fresh arrangements, capped by Nobuo Uematsu's theme song, "No Promises to Keep," sung by Loren Allred. This is the middle chapter of the trilogy and its widest in scope, the point where the world of Final Fantasy VII finally opens up and the story builds toward the moments longtime players have waited decades to see reimagined.
