A train pulls into a Midgar station, a mercenary with an enormous sword drops from the roof, and within minutes you are helping blow up a Mako reactor. That opening bombing run is where Final Fantasy VII grabbed a generation of PlayStation owners and never let go. Square's first PlayStation Final Fantasy traded the series' 16-bit sprites for pre-rendered backgrounds, polygon characters and cinematic full-motion video, and in 1997 the leap felt enormous. For a huge number of players outside Japan, this was the first Japanese RPG they ever finished, and the genre's audience in the West was never the same.

Cloud Strife, an ex-SOLDIER hired by the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE, starts out caring only about his fee. Barret Wallace, Tifa Lockhart and Aeris (as the original English release spells her name) pull him into a fight against the Shinra Electric Power Company, which is draining the planet's life energy to light its cities. Then Sephiroth steps out of Cloud's past, and a revolt against a corporation turns into something far stranger: a story about buried memories, identity and grief that contains one of the most famous scenes in video game history.

Materia is the stroke of genius. Every spell, summon and command lives in glowing orbs that slot into weapons and armor, and linked slots let you pair them, so All turns a single Cure into a party-wide heal and Added Effect can graft a status spell onto your sword. Limit Breaks give each character a showpiece attack when the gauge fills, and the world keeps opening up long after Midgar: the Gold Saucer's arcade of minigames, a snowboarding run and a motorbike chase, chocobo breeding and racing, and optional superbosses waiting for players who think they have seen it all.

Nobuo Uematsu's score ties it together, from the pounding battle theme to Aeris's gentle melody and the choral thunder of "One-Winged Angel." This original PlayStation release is where everything the name now means began, from Advent Children and Crisis Core to the modern Remake series, and playing it on original hardware brings back the chunky field models, the rough-edged translation and the jaw-dropping cutscenes exactly as they hit in 1997.
