Item Description

Final Fantasy rarely goes to war this literally. Type-0 opens with the Militesi Empire storming the Dominion of Rubrum and its crystal-powered academy, Akademeia, and the fourteen cadets of Class Zero are thrown straight into the fighting. Blood is spilled, soldiers die, and the story never pretends that war is anything but brutal. It is a darker, stranger Final Fantasy, and that is exactly what makes it worth playing.

Class Zero is the hook. Each of its students fights in a completely different way: Ace throws enchanted cards, King fires twin pistols, Deuce plays a magic flute, Sice swings a scythe, Nine charges in with a lance, and Jack wields a katana. You take three into each mission and can swap among the roster on the fly, so learning everyone's strengths is half the fun. Combat runs in real time, and the Killsight and Breaksight system rewards precise timing, flashing a marker on an enemy at the instant it is vulnerable to a single devastating hit. Magic is fueled by Phantoma harvested from fallen foes, which ties the game's grim lore straight into its mechanics.

Between missions you roam Akademeia, sit in on lectures, chat with classmates and take on side tasks, while the world map adds large-scale battles in which you direct troops and capture enemy territory. Director Hajime Tabata, who went on to direct Final Fantasy XV, gave it a mature, melancholy tone, and Takeharu Ishimoto's score, capped by the theme song "Zero" by Bump of Chicken, leans fully into it.

The original PSP game came out only in Japan in 2011, so this 2015 HD release was the first official English-language way to play it. The remaster sharpened the visuals and added new difficulty levels, and while its handheld roots still show in places, the ambition shines through. It is the cult Final Fantasy spin-off the West waited years to play, and on PlayStation 4 it finally sits alongside the numbered entries where it belongs.

About the game

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is a high-definition remaster of the Japan-exclusive PlayStation Portable game Final Fantasy Type-0. Set in the war-torn world of Orience, the game follows Class Zero, a group of fourteen students from the Dominion of Rubrum's elite military academy. They are thrust into a conflict against the invading Militesi Empire, uncovering the secrets behind the war and the existence of powerful crystals. Gameplay features real-time combat, allowing players to control three active party members from the fourteen available, each possessing unique weapons and abilities. The game includes mission-based progression, exploration of the Akademeia hub, and strategic battles on the world map. The HD version introduced improved graphics, additional difficulty levels, and the removal of the original multiplayer functionality, integrating previously multiplayer-exclusive content into the single-player experience.
