Item Description

Luso Clemens just wanted summer vacation to start. Instead he is stuck in detention in the school library, opens a strange old book, and lands in the middle of a battlefield in Ivalice. Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift turns that premise into a huge, breezy tactics adventure, with Luso joining Cid and his Clan Gully on the hunt for a way home, alongside the thief Adelle and the moogle minstrel Hurdy.

Battles play out on grid-based maps where positioning, terrain and ability choice decide everything, and the job system is enormous. Seven races are playable: Humes, Moogles, Viera, Bangaa and Nu Mou return from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, joined by the Seeq from Final Fantasy XII and the winged Gria, created for this game. Between them they offer more than fifty jobs, many tied to a particular race, and abilities are learned through the weapons and armor your units equip, which turns every loot drop into a new build to plan. A Summoner calling down Scions to hit every enemy at once plays nothing like a Dragoon or a Ninja, and mixing them is where the fun lives.

Every fight also comes with a Judge and a Law, a random restriction such as no healing or avoiding certain spells. Follow it and you earn bonus rewards; break it and the Judge walks off, leaving fallen units unable to be revived until the battle ends. Around the battles sits a deep clan layer: story missions, side quests, Clan quests with optional handicaps that raise the rewards, training missions for the units on your bench, and auctions where your clan bids for control of whole regions.

Director Yuichi Murasawa, who also led Tactics Advance, aimed for a friendlier entry point without stripping out depth, and Hitoshi Sakimoto's score carries the grand, orchestral Ivalice sound he established across Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII. Fans of XII will spot Vaan and Penelo making guest appearances, too. IGN named it the best strategy game on the DS for 2008, and few handheld tactics games offer this much to dig into: a campaign big enough to lose an entire summer to, much as Luso does.
