Item Description

Long before Cloud, Squall or Zidane, Final Fantasy was four nameless Warriors of Light carrying darkened orbs across a world in decay. Final Fantasy Origins returns to that beginning, pairing a remastered Final Fantasy with Final Fantasy II, a game North American players had never been able to buy in English until this PlayStation compilation arrived, nearly fourteen years after its Japanese debut.

In the original Final Fantasy you build the party yourself from six classes, Fighter, Thief, Black Belt, Red Mage, White Mage and Black Mage, and every combination changes how the adventure plays. The quest opens with a princess rescue from the knight Garland and widens into a journey against four elemental fiends, through a sunken shrine and a fortress in the sky, before looping back on itself with a twist that still surprises first-timers. Later your heroes earn upgraded classes, turning a Fighter into a Knight or a Thief into a Ninja.

Final Fantasy II is the stranger, more ambitious sibling. Firion, Maria and Guy lose their home to the Palamecian Empire and join the rebellion against it, and the story is darker and more character-driven than anything the series had attempted, with allies who join, fall and are mourned along the way. It throws out experience levels entirely: characters improve the skills they actually use, so swinging swords sharpens swordplay and casting spells strengthens magic. A keyword system lets you learn important words and raise them in conversation, and the game introduced two series fixtures, the chocobo and a character named Cid.

The PlayStation versions build on Square's WonderSwan Color remakes, with redrawn graphics, a fresh translation, new CG cinematics and an art gallery to explore. Taken together, the two games show where Final Fantasy's DNA comes from: the class building that later blossomed in the job systems, and the narrative ambition that would define the series from IV onward. For tracing the family tree back to its roots, this compilation is where it starts.
