Item Description

Yuri and Chelinka grow up as twins in a quiet village, until the day their father is killed and Chelinka loses her voice, left able to speak to her brother only telepathically. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates builds its story from that loss, following the siblings as they leave home, gather allies and collide with Galdes and his Lunites. It is a far more personal, story-driven take on Crystal Chronicles than the GameCube original, and it is set in that world's Golden Age, thousands of years before the first game.

Combat is real-time action. You chain combos with the face buttons and d-pad, leap onto enemies for stronger strikes and cast magic built from Magicite, which party members can combine to power up spells or create new ones. Holding the right trigger swaps the screens and slows time so you can tap an enemy on the touch screen for a special attack. Your companions come from the world's four tribes, the balanced Clavats, sturdy Lilties, magic-focused Yukes and ranged-fighting Selkies, and it is a likable crew: the Yuke scholar Alhanalem, the Lilty alchemist Meeth and the Selkie wild boy Gnash among them.

Multiplayer is where the Crystal Chronicles name was born, and Ring of Fates includes a co-op mode for up to four players, with Quest and Free modes and its own story set after the main campaign as the party works to restore the city of Rebena Te Ra. It was designed for local wireless play as well as Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the latter long since retired, and the solo campaign stands on its own.

Kumi Tanioka, who scored the first Crystal Chronicles, returned for the music and wrote it around period instruments, giving the game a warm, folk-flavored sound that suits its storybook world. Reviewers liked it more than they loved it, but the twins' story earned an IGN Best Story nomination and the game found a big audience on DS. For players who enjoyed the GameCube original's tribes and world but wanted a stronger narrative, this is the entry that gives Crystal Chronicles its heart.
