Picture a 50-50 ball at midfield where the stronger, faster player actually wins it. That was the promise EA Canada built FIFA Soccer 09 around: a reworked collision system that weighs each player's speed, weight and power in every challenge, plus a new jostle system for shielding the ball, so a towering center-back and a slight playmaker no longer bounce off one another the same way. Add sharper goalkeeping, quicker ball release and more urgent runs off the ball, and the PlayStation 3 version plays with a physicality the series had been chasing for years.
The headline mode was Be A Pro: Seasons. Rather than running a whole squad, you take control of a single player and live inside that one position for four seasons, and on PS3 your performances can earn a move to a new club and a call-up to the national team. It turns a 90-minute match into a test of discipline: hold your shape, make the run, wait for the pass. Manager Mode is there for the long-term planners, while Kick-off matches can bring rain or snow, with day, dusk or night lighting depending on the stadium, and on PS3 you even control your own goal celebrations.
The licensing reaches across 30 leagues and more than 500 clubs, and the default English commentary pairs Martin Tyler with Andy Gray, the booth that soundtracked this era of FIFA. The game was also built for its moment online, with 10-versus-10 Be A Pro matches and the adidas Live Season service that updated player form week by week; those services belong to 2008, but the offline game stands firmly on its own.
Critics scored the PS3 version in the high 80s, and it marks the point where the series' rebuild for the HD consoles really clicked. For a soccer fan it is a time capsule of the 2008-09 season, its rosters and kits frozen at kickoff, with local matches against a friend on the couch playing exactly the way they did that autumn.

It was released in October 2008 for Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii, Xbox 360 and Zeebo. It was later in November 2008 released for the N-Gage 2.0 and Mobile phone.
