Item Description
Before FIFA became an annual fixture on every console, it was a bold new experiment from EA, and the Sega CD received the most upgraded version of that very first game. Developed by Extended Play Productions and released in 1994, this disc is known in Europe as FIFA International Soccer: Championship Edition, and despite sharing its name with the Genesis cartridge, it is a substantial step beyond it.
The heart of it is the same angled, isometric view of the pitch that made the original look so different from every other soccer game of its day, with international squads, slide tackles and the long, sweeping passes that set the template for the series. The Sega CD edition then piles on improvements. Sixteen new teams join the lineup, more modes are available, the computer opponents are smarter and the whole match moves at a noticeably quicker pace than the cartridge.
The CD format brings a proper soundtrack and, better still, stadium crowds that chant, which goes a long way toward making a match feel like an event. A licensing deal with Adidas and its Predator boot introduced new moves as well, including the ability to curve your shots, a trick Sensible Soccer players will recognize and one that rewards players who line up a free kick with care.
This is the disc that shows what the Sega CD could add to an established cartridge hit. It is the origin point of EA's FIFA line in its most complete early form, and a match on real hardware still captures what made 1990s soccer gaming so much fun: fast, a little chaotic and endlessly replayable.

About the game
FIFA International Soccer: Championship Edition, known in-game and in North America simply as FIFA International Soccer is a Sega Mega-CD football game released as part of Electronic Arts' FIFA series. Despite its potentially confusing title, the game is an upgrade over the original FIFA International Soccer released for the Sega Mega Drive, with sixteen new teams, a CD soundtrack (and crowd chants), updated intros and a licensing deal with Adidas and its Predator boot, leading to new in-game moves (such as the ability to curve shots similar to Sensible Soccer). More modes were added and the computer AI was improved, and the overall pace of play is much quicker than the prior iteration.
