Item Description
Before most console players had heard the word roguelike, two of Sonic the Hedgehog's creators made one. Fatal Labyrinth was designed by Hirokazu Yasuhara, with art by Naoto Ohshima, and it first appeared in Japan on Sega's Meganet online service as Shi no Meikyuu: Labyrinth of Death before arriving on Genesis cartridge.
The premise is refreshingly blunt. An unremarkable hero from a frightened village agrees to enter a forbidden labyrinth, fight his way through thirty floors and take back the stolen Holy Goblet from the dragon guarding it on the last one. Movement is turn-based on a grid and the monsters only act when you do, so every step is a small decision about whether to fight, retreat or dig through your pack for something that might save you.
Food is the clock that keeps you moving. A well-fed hero slowly regenerates health and a hungry one starts losing it, yet eat too much and you can stuff yourself to death, exactly the sort of dark joke this genre loves. Your gear brings its own gamble, because working out which finds are blessings and which are cursed sits at the center of every run. Checkpoints every fifth floor soften the sting of failure a little, but the deeper levels make sure you never feel safe.
Ars Technica has called it the earliest notable Japanese-made roguelike, and it arrived years before Chunsoft's Mystery Dungeon games made the genre a fixture on Japanese consoles. Hardcore Gaming 101 praised its just-one-more pull, and that is precisely how it plays: simple to learn, quick to punish and very hard to put down. For anyone who loves Shiren the Wanderer or today's roguelites, this cartridge is a fascinating look at the console branch of the genre taking its first steps, with a little early Sonic DNA in the mix.
