Item Description

Every night, Rei Kurosawa falls asleep and finds herself back inside the same decaying manor, and every night she goes a little deeper. Fatal Frame III: The Tormented builds its horror around grief. Rei, a freelance photographer, survived the car crash that killed the man she loved, Yuu, and when she glimpses him in a photograph taken at an old house, she is pulled into the Manor of Sleep, where the dead linger and a creeping tattoo spreads across the skin of everyone touched by its curse.

As in the earlier games, your only weapon is the Camera Obscura, an antique camera that can capture and exorcise spirits. Fighting a ghost means letting it get terrifyingly close, holding it in the viewfinder while the shot charges, and snapping at the instant it lunges for the most powerful Fatal Frame shot. It rewards nerve as much as reflexes, and Tecmo's series built its reputation on exactly that tension between looking closer and wanting to look away.

The Tormented also ties the series together. Alongside Rei you play as Miku Hinasaki, the heroine of the original Fatal Frame, now working as Rei's assistant, and Kei Amakura, a relative of the twins from Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. Each explores the Manor of Sleep in their own way, and between nights Rei returns to her house in the waking world to piece together clues, research the legend of the Tattooed Priestess and watch the curse tighten its grip on the people around her.

Directed by series director Makoto Shibata, it is a horror story that is as much about letting go as it is about surviving, and the waking-world chapters give the scares room to breathe and sink in. If you have played the first two games, this is where their threads come together. If you have not, it is still a deeply atmospheric PlayStation 2 nightmare, best played late at night with the lights off.
