Item Description
Early in Far Cry 4, Pagan Min asks Ajay Ghale to wait at the dinner table while he steps out. Players who actually sit tight are rewarded with a famous hidden ending, a few quiet minutes in which Ajay finishes the errand that brought him to Kyrat before the war ever begins. Everyone else gets Kyrat itself, a fictional Himalayan nation of monasteries, rope bridges and snow-capped peaks, and an open world as playful as anything Ubisoft Montreal had built.
Ajay has come home to scatter his mother's ashes, but Kyrat is in the grip of a civil war between Pagan's regime and the Golden Path, the rebel movement his father founded. Troy Baker plays Pagan as a flamboyant, unnervingly charming tyrant in a pink suit, while the rebel leaders Sabal and Amita keep pushing Ajay to choose between tradition and progress, and those choices shape what the Golden Path becomes.
The sandbox is where Far Cry 4 shines. A grappling hook lets you scale cliffs, the buzzer gyrocopter lets you scout outposts from above, and a wingsuit turns every mountaintop into a launch point. You can ride an elephant straight through an enemy base and watch it toss soldiers aside, free bell towers to open up the map, and storm the fortresses held by Pagan's lieutenants. The wildlife is a threat all its own, with eagles that dive at you from above and honey badgers that refuse to back down. Trips into the mythical Shangri-La swap gunfire for bow-and-arrow battles alongside a tiger companion in a painted dreamscape.
Cliff Martinez's score gives Kyrat a hypnotic, uneasy mood, and the open world was designed around two-player online co-op. Far Cry 4 took the formula of Far Cry 3 and made it bigger, louder and stranger, and Pagan Min belongs in the same conversation as Vaas whenever fans argue about the series' best villain.
