Item Description
You arrive in an unnamed central African country already sick with malaria, and the man you were hired to kill finds you first. The Jackal, an arms dealer selling to both sides of a civil war, leaves you alive in a hotel room on purpose. That opening sets the tone for Far Cry 2: a bleak, unsentimental shooter where the world itself is as dangerous as anyone holding a gun.
Ubisoft Montreal built the game around systems that push back. Scavenged weapons wear out, jam at the worst moment and eventually fall apart, so you keep returning to the arms dealer for fresh gear paid for in rough diamonds. Malaria flares up without warning and has to be treated with pills you earn by helping refugees. Fire is the star of the show: set the dry grass alight and the blaze spreads with the wind, consuming outposts, vehicles and anyone too slow to escape. Missions can be approached head-on or with stealth, and the map is a physical sheet of paper you hold up in your hands while you drive, with a GPS on the dashboard.
Your fellow mercenaries, the Buddies, are the most memorable twist. They offer side missions with alternate routes through a job, and if you fall in a firefight one of them may drag you to safety. If they go down, you have to decide whether to spend precious medicine to save them, and they can be lost for good. Stretching across two large regions of savannah, desert and jungle, the open world is unforgiving, with checkpoints that refill with enemies and long drives where something always seems to go wrong. A map editor and multiplayer suite rounded out the package.
Far Cry 2 was a polarizing game at launch, admired by critics and frustrating to players expecting a power fantasy, and its reputation has climbed steadily since. Later Far Cry games went in a more playful, theme-park direction, which makes this one feel even more distinctive now. It is the series at its most uncompromising and atmospheric, and on PS3 it is the place to find out why its spreading fires, its Buddies and its creeping sense of moral rot still come up whenever players talk about shooters that dared to feel different.
