Item Description

In 2004, Fallout on a PlayStation 2 controller with a friend on the couch beside you was a strange idea, and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel leaned into it anyway. The first Fallout game made for consoles, it trades the turn-based, open-ended role-playing of Interplay's PC originals for a top-down action RPG in the vein of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, with two-player local co-op and wave after wave of raiders, mutants and robots to cut down.

You choose one of three Brotherhood of Steel initiates, Cain, Cyrus or Nadia, and head into the ruins around Carbon, Texas, in the year 2208. The familiar SPECIAL attributes are there, though each character's values are fixed, and leveling up earns skill points that behave more like perks, sharpening a character's combat specialties. Progress runs in a straight line through some 50 zones, so the focus stays on loot, weapon and armor upgrades, and combat rather than wandering the wasteland.

That focus divided players. Longtime Fallout fans missed the dialogue trees and moral choices, and the game is usually treated as a spinoff outside the main series canon. Taken on its own terms, though, it is a straightforward co-op dungeon crawler dressed in Fallout's dark humor, heavy weapons and post-apocalyptic decor, and it plays best exactly the way it was designed, with a second player on the other controller.

It is also a fascinating piece of franchise history. Brotherhood of Steel arrived between Interplay's original games and Bethesda's Fallout 3, at a moment when the series' future was uncertain, and a planned sequel never made it out the door. If you are tracing Fallout's path from PC to console, this is the detour most players never took.

About the game

As a spinoff, Brotherhood of Steel's gameplay greatly differs from that of other Fallout games. The gameplay is linear, not open-world. Instead of being able to travel freely across a broad world full of places and events as in other Fallout games, the player is confined to one location at a time. Previously visited locations cannot be visited again, and new locations can only be discovered by advancing the story. There are 50 distinct zones of varying size in Brotherhood of Steel. Brotherhood of Steel uses many of the same mechanics as other entries in the Fallout series, including the SPECIAL (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck) attribute assignment system. These seven attributes are assigned numeric values and govern most interactions in the game. Unlike other Fallout games, however, the values are constant for each character rather than customizable. Skills exist in this game, but they do not behave like skills in other Fallout games. Rather, they are analogous to perks. When the player levels up, they receive "skill points" to increase the power of skills. Some skills also have level restrictions.
