Item Description

Country roads lead somewhere very strange in Fallout 76. On Reclamation Day in 2102, just 25 years after the Great War, the doors of Vault 76 swing open and its residents step out into an Appalachia that is still green, still colorful, and crawling with creatures pulled straight out of West Virginia folklore. That makes it the earliest point in the Fallout timeline any of the games had visited, a wasteland that has not had time to turn brown yet.

Bethesda Game Studios mapped out six distinct regions, from the lush Forest and the chemical-soaked Toxic Valley to the mountainous Savage Divide, the mined-out Ash Heap, the overgrown Mire and the alien Cranberry Bog. The Mothman, the Flatwoods Monster and the Grafton Monster all stalk the hills, the Scorched and their winged Scorchbeasts are the plague at the heart of the story, and real landmarks get the Fallout treatment, from the Whitespring luxury resort to a Mothman museum in Point Pleasant. Character growth runs on SPECIAL perk cards you can swap to suit a role, and the portable C.A.M.P. lets you set up a home base almost anywhere on the map.

This was the first Fallout built around other people. The survivors you meet in the hills were designed to be real players to trade with, team up with or fight, and the endgame famously lets groups track down launch codes and fire nuclear missiles from Appalachia's silos. Its 2018 launch was rough, and the original map had no living human NPCs, telling its story through holotapes, terminals and notes left by the dead. The Wastelanders update in 2020 changed that, bringing human characters, dialogue choices and rival factions to the region, and years of further updates and seasons followed.

Fallout 76 was designed from the ground up as an online game, so it plays very differently from Fallout 4 even though the two look alike. The appeal is the setting and the shared, sandbox spirit: a version of the wasteland that still has a pulse, cryptids in the treeline and a soundtrack of Appalachian radio, with a Vault 76 jumpsuit waiting for anyone who wants to see what happened in the very first years after the bombs.
