Item Description
The bombs fall before you have finished your morning coffee. Fallout 4 opens on a sunny October day in 2077 in the suburb of Sanctuary Hills, with Codsworth the robot butler bustling around the kitchen, an infant son in the nursery and a Vault-Tec salesman at the door. Minutes later you are racing up the hill to Vault 111 as a mushroom cloud rises over Boston. When the Sole Survivor finally steps back outside, two centuries have passed, Shaun is missing, and the Commonwealth is waiting.
Bethesda Game Studios built this 2015 entry around a fully voiced protagonist and much sharper gunplay than Fallout 3, while keeping V.A.T.S., which now slows time to a crawl instead of freezing it. Power armor became a walking tank you climb into, fuel with fusion cores and upgrade piece by piece, and the game makes the point early by handing you a suit and a minigun to face a Deathclaw in the streets of Concord. Crafting reaches into everything: weapon and armor mods turn junk like desk fans, typewriters and duct tape into scopes, receivers and armor plating, while the settlement system lets you build entire towns, wire up defenses and recruit settlers for Preston Garvey's Minutemen.
The Commonwealth is a superb setting, a ruined New England of colonial landmarks and retro-futurist kitsch. Diamond City sits inside the walls of Fenway Park, the Freedom Trail leads to the secretive Railroad, the airship Prydwen brings the Brotherhood of Steel looming over the skyline, and the Institute and its synths hang over every conversation. The companions are among the series' best, from the hard-boiled synth detective Nick Valentine to the crusading reporter Piper, with Dogmeat trotting along beside you early on. Inon Zur's score and the crackling oldies on Diamond City Radio set the mood for every scavenging run.
Those factions want very different futures, and the endgame makes you pick a side in a way that lingers. Fallout 4 was a huge hit and took Game of the Year at the 2016 D.I.C.E. Awards, but its real legacy is how it turned scavenging into a hobby of its own. This is the Fallout where a pile of tin cans and wonderglue becomes a laser rifle or a guard tower, and where a playthrough can be as much about building a home in the wasteland as surviving it.
