Item Description
Zeref has made his move, the Alvarez Empire is marching on Fiore, and the Spriggan 12 are as dangerous as any enemies the guild has ever faced. Fairy Tail 2 takes on the biggest fight in Hiro Mashima's manga and anime, the climactic Alvarez Empire arc, and lets you live it as Natsu, Lucy and the rest of the Fairy Tail guild. Developed by Gust and published by Koei Tecmo, it is the sequel to their 2020 Fairy Tail RPG, made to carry the story all the way to its end.
The biggest change from the first game is the combat. Where the original used turn-based battles, the sequel moves to a semi-real-time system: characters act on cooldowns, basic attacks build SP to spend on skills, and every skill chips away at an enemy's break gauge until its defenses collapse and critical hits start landing. Using skills raises your Fairy Rank, repeating a spell within a turn amplifies it, and the flashiest moments come from Link Attacks with your party, Unison team-ups and screen-filling Extreme Magic. The playable roster includes Natsu, Lucy, Gray and Erza alongside Laxus and Juvia.
Between battles, a large map of Fiore is scattered with treasure chests, collectibles and marked area bosses, with campfires serving as free rest stops and fast-travel points. Gust also wrote a game-original chapter, The Key to the Unknown, that carries the adventure into an adaptation of the manga's ending, and a built-in glossary helps keep track of the series' enormous cast. The bright, colorful visuals and the Japanese voice performances keep it feeling true to the show.
Reviews were mixed on its pacing and cutscene presentation, but the appeal for fans is easy to see: this is the chance to take on Zeref, his Spriggan 12 and the Black Dragon Acnologia with the guild's own magic instead of just watching it unfold. Paired with the 2020 original, it completes Gust's two-game adaptation of the saga's final stretch.
