Item Description

Few role-playing games care as much about what your hero looks like at the end as Fable does. Spend your life rescuing villagers and a halo glows above your head; take the darker road and horns curl out of your skull while townsfolk scatter when you walk into the square. Sword fighting builds muscle, heavy use of Will magic leaves glowing marks across your skin, scars stay where blades found you, and age catches up with you whichever path you choose. Your hero is a living record of every decision you make.

It begins in the village of Oakvale, where a boy's quiet childhood ends in a bandit raid, and follows him through the Heroes' Guild and out into Albion, a storybook England of thatched villages, haunted woods and the bustling town of Bowerstone. The quests carry a dry, very British sense of humor, and the shadow over all of it belongs to Jack of Blades, a masked villain whose menace grows with every chapter. Along the way there are Arena bouts, rival heroes such as Thunder and Whisper, Demon Doors that open only for heroes who satisfy their strange demands, houses to buy, spouses to court and chickens to punt across the village green.

The Lost Chapters is the fullest form of the game. Big Blue Box and Lionhead added nine new areas and sixteen new quests, along with fresh monsters, weapons, alignment-based spells, armor, towns and expressions, plus the ability to give gifts to children. Briar Rose and Scythe, minor figures the first time around, step into the main story; Jack of Blades' voice was reworked into something deeper and more demonic; and the murder of Lady Grey's sister becomes a mystery you can finally uncover and resolve. The story also carries on past the point where the original release ended, answering one of the most common complaints about the 2004 game, that it was over too soon.

Danny Elfman's lilting main theme and Russell Shaw's score set the fairy-tale mood, and the whole adventure plays like a fable in the old sense, with consequences you can see every time you catch your reflection. On the original Xbox, where Peter Molyneux's ambitious RPG first made its name, The Lost Chapters is the edition to reach for: all the charm and mischief of Fable with the gaps of the first release filled in.

About the game

Fable was expanded and rereleased as Fable: The Lost Chapters for Xbox and Windows PC platforms in September 2005. The game was later ported to Mac OS X by Robosoft Technologies and published by Feral Interactive on 31 March 2008. The Lost Chapters features all the content found in the original Fable, as well as additional new content such as new monsters, weapons, alignment based spells, items, armour, towns, buildings, and expressions, as well as the ability to give children objects. The story receives further augmentation in the form of nine new areas and sixteen additional quests. Characters such as Briar Rose and Scythe, who played only minor roles in the original game, are now given more importance and are included in certain main and side quests. Other character-based augmentations include the voice of the antagonist, Jack of Blades, sounding deeper, harsher and more demonic, and the ability to uncover (and resolve) the murder mystery of Lady Grey's sister.
