Item Description

Somewhere in the middle of Fable III, the game hands you the crown and dares you to keep the promises you made to get it. That twist is what makes Lionhead's 2010 Xbox 360 RPG so memorable. The first half is a revolution: fifty years after Fable II, Albion has entered its industrial age under King Logan, your own older brother, and you rally rebels across the kingdom to drag him off the throne. The second half asks a much harder question, because a darkness from the distant land of Aurora is coming, the treasury is thin, and every vow you swore to the people now has a price.

Moment to moment it plays like the friendliest action RPG of its generation. Melee weapons, firearms and spell gauntlets all live on single buttons, and the gauntlets can be combined to weave two spells together. Your weapons physically change based on how you fight and how you behave, so no two heroes end up carrying quite the same sword. The pause menu is replaced by the Sanctuary, a magical war room run by your butler Jasper, voiced by John Cleese, where you change outfits, browse your armory and check the map. Progress comes through the Road to Rule, a gated path of chests that unlock new abilities as your followers grow, and your loyal dog returns to sniff out treasure and dig spots.

The voice cast is outrageous for a game of its era: Michael Fassbender as Logan, Ben Kingsley as the Dweller leader Sabine, Simon Pegg as the soldier Ben Finn, Naomie Harris as the rebel Page, Bernard Hill as your mentor Walter, and Stephen Fry back as the deliciously wicked Reaver. Albion is full of the series' trademark British humor, from chicken-costume odd jobs to property you can buy, rent out and redecorate. A new touch system lets you hold hands, hug or drag people along, and co-op lets a second player join your world, where the two heroes can even marry and work together.

Fable III divided some fans who wanted the deeper systems of earlier entries, but its central idea still lands. Few RPGs make you feel the gap between campaigning and governing so personally, and the ending you reach depends on the kind of ruler you become: saint, tyrant or something in between. It is the final mainline Fable of Lionhead's original run and the natural next chapter after Fable II on the 360.

About the game

Set 50 years after the events of Fable II, the continent of Albion (where the Fable series is set) is under the control of Logan, a tyrant king and the Hero's older brother[1]. The player's character, the "Hero", is forced into a quest to become a revolutionary leader to defeat Logan after he reveals his true personality to the Hero. Over the course of the first half of the game, the Hero will overthrow Logan and become ruler of Albion themselves. During the second half of the game, a strange force from Aurora, called The Darkness will threaten Albion and the player has to decide how to react to it.
