Item Description

Every Hero of Albion starts as a boy in Oakvale, doing good deeds for pocket change so he can buy his sister a birthday present. Then raiders burn the village, and the boy is spirited away to the Heroes' Guild. Fable follows that child through an entire life, and what made it a sensation in 2004 is how much that life shows on him: every good deed and cruel act, every scar, tattoo, haircut and extra helping of pie leaves a visible mark.

Morality is written right onto your Hero. Righteous choices bring a soft halo and adoring crowds; evil ones grow horns and send villagers scattering in fear. Townsfolk comment on your reputation, applaud, mock or even flirt, and a Hero with enough renown can buy property, marry and settle down between quests. Combat moves fluidly between melee, archery and Will magic, and as your Hero grows more experienced the years pile on, so the swaggering apprentice of the opening hours becomes a grey-haired legend by the end.

The quest line runs through Bowerstone, the forests and marshes of Albion and the bloodsport of the Arena, toward a confrontation with the masked Jack of Blades, with the Guildmaster, the wizard Maze and the blind seer Theresa pulling at the threads of your story. Big Blue Box, working with Peter Molyneux's Lionhead, gave Albion a storybook British charm that is equal parts fairy tale and cheeky comedy, and Danny Elfman's main theme opens Russell Shaw's lush score.

Fable famously couldn't contain every idea promised before launch, but what shipped was funny, warm and quietly influential, a game that sold Xbox owners on the thrill of a world reacting to who they chose to become. It launched a franchise that carried on through Fable II and Fable III, and this is the original release, before the expanded Lost Chapters edition, where Albion first came to life.

About the game

In Fable, the players' every action determines their character's skills, appearances and moralities. Life stories are created from childhood through adulthood and on to old age. Players may choose the paths of righteousness or dedicate their characters' lives to evil; observing as they transform into reflections of their actions and decisions. As players' characters develop, the world reacts to them and their actions. People comment on their successes, failures, appearances and behaviors. Their many opinions are expressed through applause, mockery, trepidation, panic and even flirtation. With each person characters aid and every creature they slay, the world is changed forever. In Fable, gamers decide: "Who will I be?"
