Item Description

In the early 1990s the F-117 Nighthawk was among the most famous aircraft on the planet, the angular black stealth fighter that had become the face of the Gulf War air campaign. F-117 Night Storm, a Genesis exclusive from Electronic Arts, puts you in that cockpit and builds the game around what made the real plane famous: slipping into defended airspace and hitting a single critical target.

The heart of it is the campaign, a United States Air Force career that begins with training sorties over the Nevada desert, carries you to Panama and ends in the Gulf, across 30 missions in nine theaters. Each mission has a primary objective you must destroy before you can move on, so choosing your approach and your loadout from seven weapon types, Sidewinder missiles among them, matters as much as stick skill. Laser targeting and infrared displays of enemy aircraft and ground targets put the stealth fighter's precision-strike role at the center of the action. Arcade mode strips things back for a quick sortie, letting you set the number of enemy air and ground units, the environment, the mission length and the difficulty.

EA wrapped the missions in cinema-style insets for its storytelling and added digitized speech, a lot of presentation for a 16-bit cartridge. Contemporary reviews were mixed: Electronic Gaming Monthly praised the concept, the cinemas and the level design but found the flying choppy, so this is a sim that rewards patience and planning more than twitch reflexes.

It is a vivid period piece from the moment stealth technology captured the public imagination, and a natural companion to EA's earlier F-22 Interceptor on the Genesis, together covering the console's small but distinctive corner of military flight sims.

This game allows the player to take control of an F-117A Stealth Fighter. The game is broken down into either an arcade or campaign mode. In the arcade mode, the player can decide the number of enemy air and ground units, the environment, length of mission, and the difficulty level. This mode allows the player to hone their skills in order to prepare for the campaign mode. The campaign mode is the main part of the game and contains 30 missions. The game includes nine theaters of combat such as training missions in the Nevada Desert, to the conflict in Panama, and also to the Gulf War. Each mission has a primary object that must be destroyed in order to advance to the next mission.
