Item Description

There is no health bar in Escape Goat 2. One spike, one fireball, one falling block, and the room resets, so every puzzle becomes a little machine you have to understand completely before you can walk out of it. You play a purple goat trapped in a vast stronghold, freeing the imprisoned souls of sheep one room at a time, and the brilliance lies in how much variety the game wrings from a handful of tools.

The goat can jump, double jump and headbutt, but the real partner is a mouse. It squeezes through gaps the goat cannot fit, scurries into corners to hit switches and lures enemies away so you can slip past. A magic hat lets the goat swap places with the mouse instantly, opening up routes that seem impossible at first glance. Add fire-spitting enemies, explosive crates, moving platforms and trapdoors, and rooms quickly turn into intricate chains of cause and effect.

MagicalTimeBean, the one-man studio of Ian Stocker, made the original Escape Goat a cult hit on Xbox Live Indie Games, and this sequel, published under Double Fine's indie label, more than doubles its scope with larger rooms, HD visuals and dynamic lighting. The stronghold is split into ten zones you can tackle in your own order, and collecting sheep souls unlocks secret rooms with some of the stronghold's trickiest challenges.

It starts out cute and simple, then turns devilish, and the moment you finally see the solution to a room you have been staring at for twenty minutes is about as satisfying as puzzle games get. For a compact indie, it is remarkably polished, and the kind of game that makes a PS4 library more interesting.
