Item Description
“Hey, you. You're finally awake.” Ralof's line on a prison cart bound for an execution in Helgen has been quoted, remixed and memed for more than a decade, and it opens one of the biggest adventures of its generation. Minutes later a dragon crashes the proceedings, the cart ride is forgotten, and Skyrim simply lets you go.
You are the Dragonborn, born with a dragon's soul, able to absorb the souls of slain dragons and learn Shouts, words of power in the dragon tongue, from walls hidden deep in Nordic barrows. The main quest sends you up the Seven Thousand Steps to High Hrothgar on the Throat of the World to train with the Greybeards, and eventually to face Alduin the World-Eater. At the same time, a civil war between Ulfric Stormcloak's rebels and the Imperial Legion lets you pick a side and change who rules the province's holds.
The real pull is everything off the main road. Join the Companions in Whiterun's Jorrvaskr and learn their secret, study at the College of Winterhold, work your way into the Thieves Guild beneath Riften, or answer the call of the Dark Brotherhood. There are no classes: skills grow as you use them, perk trees drawn as constellations shape a build, and you can dual-wield spells and blades, snipe from the shadows with a bow, or lose hours to smithing, enchanting and alchemy. You can buy a house, get married or simply wander, and the province is so dense that a second or third journey still turns up caves and stories you missed.
Jeremy Soule's score, with its thundering choral “Dragonborn” theme, gives the whole thing an epic sweep, and Bethesda Game Studios' vision of snowy peaks, Nordic ruins and bustling cities like Solitude and Markarth set a benchmark for open-world RPGs. Skyrim has been re-released on almost every platform since, but this is the game as it first arrived on the Xbox 360 in November 2011, before Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn, on the console where so many players first heard the Greybeards shout.
