Item Description

Einhänder is the shoot-'em-up Square made at the height of its PlayStation powers, and it looks and sounds like nothing else in the genre. The name is German for “one-handed,” a nod to the ship's single mechanical arm, and that arm is the key to everything: blow apart an enemy craft and you can snatch the weapon it was carrying, bolt it onto your fighter and turn its firepower back on the enemy.

Those captured gunpods, from a rapid Vulcan to a wide-firing Spreader to a close-range Blade, carry limited ammunition, so you are constantly scavenging, swapping and deciding what to keep. You can also flip the arm above or below the ship to change the angle of fire, which opens up clever approaches to turrets and bosses. The setting is a grim future war between Earth and the lunar colony Selene, and you fly as a Selene pilot on a desperate attack run through ruined cities and fortified strongholds.

Where most shooters stay locked to a flat side view, Einhänder uses its polygon engine to swing the camera dynamically, tilting and rotating the action through set pieces that felt remarkably cinematic for 1998. Bosses are enormous multi-part machines that rearrange themselves mid-fight, and the scoring system rewards aggressive, skilful play for anyone chasing high scores. Kenichiro Fukui's pounding electronic soundtrack drives the whole thing forward and is still a favorite among game-music collectors.

Square never made another shooter like it, which makes Einhänder a singular curiosity in the company's history, released between the landmark RPGs that defined its PlayStation era. Shmup fans prize it for its weapon-stealing depth and replay value, and Square collectors prize it as the moment the RPG giant proved it could master a completely different genre. Playing it on original hardware, with that soundtrack pumping, is the best way to experience it.
