Item Description

Few games ask you to save the world as a dolphin, and fewer still send you across time to do it. Ecco: The Tides of Time picks up after the original Ecco the Dolphin, when the alien Vortex was supposed to be finished. It was not. The Vortex Queen survived, and Ecco is pulled back into the fight, a journey that carries him from the familiar seas of his home into a distant future and back again.

Underwater, it plays like no other platform-adventure of its era. Ecco needs to surface for air, and running low while lost in a flooded maze is a special kind of panic. His sonar song is his most important tool, used to speak with other sea creatures, read the strange crystal glyphs that hold the game's secrets and find his way through dark water, while a quick charge lets him ram sharks, jellyfish and other threats. Progress comes from exploration and puzzle-solving as much as reflexes: moving boulders, finding hidden passages and working out what each glyph is asking of you.

The story is unusually strange and ambitious. Ecco meets Trellia, a dolphin from the future, and the mysterious Asterite returns from the first game, wrapping the adventure in a moody, science-fiction atmosphere that sets the Ecco series apart from anything else Sega was publishing. The series was created by Ed Annunziata and developed by the Hungarian studio Novotrade, and both games have a reputation for being demanding, cryptic and haunting in equal measure.

That atmosphere carries over to the Game Gear surprisingly well. Playing it on the backlit handheld turns Ecco's lonely, echoing ocean into something intimate, a pocket-sized trip into one of the 16-bit era's most original series. For anyone who loved the Genesis games, the Game Gear version is a fascinating way to revisit the sequel on the go.
