Item Description

Drizzt Do'Urden has carried R.A. Salvatore's fantasy novels for more than three decades, and Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance gives you the chance to swing his twin scimitars yourself. Developed by Tuque Games and published by Wizards of the Coast in 2021, this third-person action RPG is set in the frozen tundra of Icewind Dale and picks up after the events of The Crystal Shard, the 1988 novel that introduced Drizzt and his companions. Salvatore was involved from the start, and the game treats his characters with an obvious fondness.

You fight as one of four heroes from the Companions of the Hall, each with a very different feel. Drizzt is the agile dark elf duelist, Catti-brie strikes from range with her bow, Wulfgar is the towering barbarian with a warhammer, and Bruenor Battlehammer is the stubborn dwarf king who wades in with axe and shield. Together they race to stop the monsters of the region from claiming the Crystal Shard and using it to destroy their home, battling goblins, trolls, Frost Giants, Beholders and White Dragons in real-time combat built on combos, timing and gear upgrades.

Despite the familiar name, this is not a remake of Snowblind's 2001 Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance but a new game with its own story. Its reception was mixed: some critics enjoyed the combat and the chance to step into the Drizzt books, while others found the missions repetitive. It was designed around online co-op for up to four players, but in February 2025 the game was delisted from digital storefronts and its online multiplayer servers were shut down, leaving the single-player campaign as the way to play today.

For a fan of the Legend of Drizzt novels, that makes this PlayStation 5 release an interesting piece of Forgotten Realms history: a rare chance to explore Icewind Dale with the Companions of the Hall in a form that has now vanished from digital stores.
